Gig Rowing Taster Day - Charlestown -August 2008

Here are some pictures from the recent Gig Rowing Taster day which was organised for any HASSRA member in the South West region to attend. The event was held in Charlestown, which is a lovely little harbourside village near St Austell in Cornwall. You might spot a few Taunton and Bridgwater HASSRA members who took part. As you can see - it was one of the few days in August when the sun actually appeared! The rowing was good fun and was followed by a few drinks and a buffet at the local pub. This event has become a very popular annual event over the last 3 years so look out for it next year. It's free to all members too!

National Rounders Competition - Blackpool

Well done to the Taunton and Bridgwater members who were part of HASSRA South West Rounders team (pictured) - we managed to get to the semi - finals!!!

See below feedback from Hayley (T & B Hassra Chair)

(Many thanks to HASSRA SW for organising our travel & accommodation).

The bus we had was fab, posh leather seats and tables, which allowed us to sit in groups playing cards and get to know one another on the journey, which was good for the team. On behalf of the team we would also like to pass on our thanks to 'psycho' Terry, the SW 'tour-bus' driver, he was great & think he has bought all a stick of rock in Blackpool!

The team got to know each other and talk tactics over dinner at the hotel on the first night and then after breakfast all the teams set off to the pitches to begin the tournament.

SW faced a tough group and we were 1 player down every match,(as there was a rule that only a max of 4 men could play at any one time), each game finished with a close score, but our excellent team spirit & determination saw us through to the semi final, as the runners up in our group.

There was excellent conduct and play by all team members, in particular; Tom Burge for his superb bowling, which stopped a lot of rounders and got all the teams talking about us; Vicky for her great backstop action(suffering bruised knees) getting ball safely back to bowler, stopping many rounders and taking people out at 2nd; Gary, Andy, Chris, Steve & Conrad (when he was off the phone!); Mac & Amanda for some excellent quick & accurate fielding and catches. Everybody played well & with great team spirit in every game.

The organisers of the competition put on a really great event and even got us some VIP tickets so that all the teams had their own VIP 'free' entrance to a SANUK nightclub in Blackpool.

The team really did well and will be looking to get our names on that trophy next year! (and win some vouchers so Steve can go wild at B&Q!)

HASSRA National Conference and awards dinner - May 2008

This years National Conference and Awards Dinner was held at The Palace Hotel in Buxton from 12th May - 14th May. Here are a few photos.

Each of the 12 HASSRA Regions were represented at the Conference and dinner. Winners of the awards were:

Sir Philip Rogers Trophy (Best Large Club) - NOTTINGHAM
Nottingham covers 10 sites and has a very good programme for it's members. The club raised £4000 for charity in 2007 and has good involvement in both Regional and National events.

Sir Michael Partridge Trophy - Best small club - HEREFORDSHIRE
Membership of 56 over 3 sites. A very impressive programme for such a small club. They raised £3,761 for charity and the club Sponsor gives a very warm commendation.

Sir Donald Sargent Trophy - Sportsman of the year - CHRISTOPHER GALE (FYLDE)
In his sport (bowls - indoor and outdoor) he has both world and England ranking. He played for Fylde in HASSRA competitions in flat and crown green competitions. He was selected to represent HASSRA in the CSSC games at Loughborough.

Cree Trophy - Sportswoman of the year - HAYLEY MULHERON (SCOTLAND)
Her sport is netball and Hayley has represented HASRA Scotland at the CSSC games and she is fully involved in her local office HASSRA. Hayley plays for a club in the Glasgow first division. She represented Scotland as goalkeeper in Ireland and in the World Netball Championships in New Zealand. She also travelled round Scotland as a volunteer for the Mini Netball Festival for school children.

Leslie Strathie Award for Best Business Sponsor - GAIL CLARK (WEST MIDLANDS)
This is for a business partner who made a significant contribution to supporting members in achieving HASSRA goals. Gail is Manager of Birmingham Pension Centre. She believes, and practices, that happy staff are more productive staff and that HASSRA contributes to this. Gail is fully involved in HASSRA and encourages staff to become members. The club feel that they could not have achieved what they have without Gails support and encouragement. The club believes that Gail feels that "When the going gets tough, the sports and social get going".

Two awards which were announced on the night were the Sir Clifford Jarrett Trophy (Best Association) - which went to SOUTH EAST - and the Rachel Lomax Trophy (volunteer of the year) - each of the 12 Regions sent their Regional winner (who all had to stand up and be applauded!) - the overall winner was the volunteer from YORKSHIRE AND HUMBER.

Sir Leigh Lewis (head of DWP) and Leslie Strathie (head of Jobcentreplus) both gave speeches in support of HASSRA.

~ HOW YOUR CLUB MEMBERSHIP WORKS ~

~ HOW YOUR CLUB MEMBERSHIP WORKS ~

· When you join HASSRA you become a national member – with your own membership card and membership number which entitles you to all the national benefits, entry to competitions etc – (see the national website for details ). HASSRA nationally is run on a day to day basis by paid staff ( and as a club has a management committee from around the UK ).

  • HASSRA is also organised regionally – and HASSRA members also belong to their own region. In our case that is the South West Region (the office is based at Plymouth CSAC). Members are entitled to all the benefits available regionally.
  • HASSRA Southwest is run on a day to day basis by paid staff and has a board of management comprising of volunteers from the South West.

  • The region looks after and assists all the local clubs from Penzance to Gloucester and all stops between.

  • Your local club (Taunton and Bridgwater HASSRA) is run entirely voluntarily not by paid staff.

  • For day to day running of the club there is a Management Committee drawn from HASSRA members within Taunton and Bridgwater offices (Jobcentreplus, The Pension Service and The Child Support Agency who are elected each year at the Taunton and Bridgwater HASSRA AGM.

  • That means events such as a trip to The Brewhouse, trips to Dublin, shopping trips to IKEA, the Bonus Ball Competition, discounts with Tone Leisure or Taunton School Gym is run and organised by staff in their own time.

  • Events can be organised by Committee members or club members with committee support. Anyone can suggest or run an event – time available to do it is usually the deciding factor!
